What is Spiritual?

What it means to be spiritual?

There are many people who are confused concerning what it means to be truly spiritual.

I have often heard a slogan which some use, and which many believe is something good to repeat. Have you ever said, "You can be so spiritual that you are no earthly good?"

Believe me when I say that I do understand the import of what people are trying to convey when they say that, but really that slogan, no matter how good and deep it sounds, is actually wrong, unspiritual, untrue and impossible. You can never be so spiritual that you are no earthly good.

On the other hand, you can be so earthly minded that you lack spiritual virtue, morals and manners. What many of us term as spiritual is not really spiritual. If a person is so spiritual that they are no earthly good, that person is not spiritual, but the rather, that person is weird. Weird and spiritual are two different things.

Let us then examine what it means to be truly spiritual and through the Word of God, which Jesus called "TRUTH".

Firstly, to be truly spiritual, we must be born again by the Spirit of God. Jesus Christ spoke of this new birth when He was approached by a religious leader. You can read about this in John 3:1-16.

Notice that, according to Jesus, the new birth is a spiritual experience. It is receiving a new spirit, a new inner man, a new you, filled with the very love of God. This is called being saved, receiving the new birth, being washed in the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ or receiving the newness of life. You can know that you are saved. You can be sure your sins are forgiven and you are on your way to Heaven, should the Lord Jesus come or should your body die before He comes for His holy people.

1 John 5:13
"These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God."

So if you believe on Jesus Christ and received Him as your Lord and Savior according to Romans Chapter ten, verses nine and ten, you will receive this experience and be born again spiritually. Your spirit will be born from above, and you will become a child of God. You can rest assured of that.

Romans 10: 9-10
"That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation."

Now if you have done this, on the authority of God's Holy Word, you are saved. If you have not accepted Jesus as your Lord as yet, you can ask Him into your heart right now. Do it now. He loves you so much.

After receiving Christ and being born again, we must now grow and develop in the things of God, in order to live a truly spiritual life.

In order for us to follow the Spirit of God as He leads us through our spirits, we will have to learn how He directs us. We have to know when it is our spirits giving us direction and when it is our flesh trying to direct us.

God leads us through His Word, enlightened by His Spirit. (Romans 8:14, John 16:13)

God's desire is that we, as His children, learn His Voice, learn how to commune with Him daily, practice and cultivate the art of practicing His Presence, to the intent that we walk with Him in the intimacy of everyday closeness, thereby experiencing the wonders of His Person, being enabled to partake of His Divine inheritance for us, reveling in delight for all of His goodness in our lives thus displayed.

John 4:24
God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth."."

So, what does it mean to be spiritual?

As we have already said, firstly, in order to be truly spiritual a person must be born of the Spirit, born from above, and this happens when that person gives his or her life to Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. After undergoing this change of heart, the next step to becoming truly spiritual is to be filled with the Blessed Holy Spirit, because you and I can never be spiritual without the Spirit of God having his way in our lives.

Now, I must address a matter which many may find offensive, but if you believe that a person can be truly spiritual without a relationship with God, through His Son, the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit, you are sadly deceived and mistaken. I am not arguing religion here. Really, a true relationship with Almighty God and His Holy Son, the Lord Jesus Christ and communion with Him by the Holy Spirit is far more than mere religion. It is life.
